8 Reasons to Learn Chinese

Today’s New York Times’s blog talked about whether Americans will really learn Chinese. All the authors praised Europe for their foreign language education policy which makes the Europeans speak at least 2 foreign languages fluently while American government makes foreign language learning a fad which dooms to pass after a while.
Here are my 8 reasons that you should embrace Chinese and learn this foreign language well:

1. Economic competition: Nobody can neglect the rise of China in the global economy. Even though China still has a lot of problems in quality control, it will self-correct under the government’s monitoring effort and the pressure of recall from foreign countries. Join the world economy club with sharpened language skill!

2.Chinese culture has its strength and it’s beneficial to understand and learn from it. eg. It just comes to my mind that the most commonly brought up problem in America rarely happens to Chinese families (both in America and in China): credit card debt. Chinese always plan and save for their financial future and they never spend more than they earn so they can always pay the credit card bill in full and earn the cash rebate! This Chinese virtue can save a lot of American families from debt.

3. Chinese food is delicious AND cheap. While French cooking is delicious and artistic but very expensive and Japanese sushi is over-priced like a brand name sneaker, Chinese food is definitely worth the money spent. Start to learn how to order delicious and authentic Chinese dishes from the menu in Chinese restuaruant and saves lots of bucks in your dining out budget!

4. Chinese supermarkets always have lower price in seafood, fruits , vegetables and meat compare with mainstream supermarkets. If you can read and speak Chinese when you do grocery shopping, it helps.

5. One more reason around Chinese food. The Chinese diet is not fattening so it doesn’t generate obesity problem which is overwhelming in the U. S. Learn to cook Chinese food and you don’t need to have weight loss as your New Year resolution every year!

6. There are 1.3 billion Chinese so one fourth of the world population speaks Chinese. Don’t you want to join the global village?

7. China is a vast country with all kinds of physical landscape for you to explore and enjoy. Learn Chinese and you can be your own tour guide.

8. Okay, you may not believe this reason, but it’s true that Chinese is easy to learn! It doesn’t have verb tenses and gender differences in spelling nouns. Find a good tutor, practice diligently, then you will sing Chinese song like Placido Domingo in no time!
