I basically follow Glenn Doman's method to teach my daughter. However, teaching Chinese is different from teaching English. At some point, you should teach kids the basic rules on which the Chinese characters are generated. Because of existance of the rules, some characters are the fundermental building blocks for teaching other characters:

人
口
衣
絲
石
